Tonacliffe has been awarded six quality standard accreditations from the Lancashire Healthy Schools Project. These were: Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, SRE, Safety Education, Ethos and Partnerships with Families. This means that we are recognised as a Lancashire Healthy School.
Some of the on-going elements to being a healthy school we promote:
The opportunity for all children to have school milk.
Water coolers available.
Walk to school initiatives.
Safe parking initiatives.
Celebrating birthdays in class rather than bringing in foods/treats from home.
Healthy lunches / lunch boxes.
15 minutes physical activity daily on top of two hours a week P.E.
Behaviour stars and team points.
At Tonacliffe we promote healthy eating. Our school meals offer a well-balanced healthy lunch. Alternatively, children may bring their own packed lunch.
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school lunch from September 2014 following the introduction of the Government’s Universal Free School Meals. It is however still essential to register for “statutory” free school meals/milk/pupil premium if you receive certain benefits or have a household income below the Government threshold. Please enquire at the school office for details of how to do this.
Children in Years 3,4,5 and 6 may have school meals at a charge of £11.50 per week. Dinner money needs to be paid using ParentPay.
All children from Nursery to Year 2 are provided with an item of fresh fruit each day, free of charge.
Daily school milk is available to all children throughout the school if their parents wish. For details of payments please see milk scheme letter enclosed with this pack for details. Milk is free to families entitled to certain benefits, etc. please see note above on registering a claim.
Children are only allowed to bring water to drink in school throughout the school day. Children are provided with a drinking bottle free of charge when they start in our reception classes, and replacement bottles can be bought from the school office when the original is no longer serviceable at a charge of £1.20.
Children in Reception to Year 6 may buy a healthy snack each morning break. These are prepared by the school meals staff and are sold at very reasonable prices.
Children may bring their own healthy snack, such as fresh fruit or vegetable, or a piece of cheese, to eat at break time. Please do not send in processed fruit snacks as these have a very high sugar content.
